PROTON has guaranteed itself another year of strong volume growth after group sales of 19,465 units in September pushed its Year-To-Date (YTD) total to 160,886 units. This is the earliest sales has exceeded the 150,000 units barrier since 2002, the highest volume achieved since the partnership with Geely began in 2017 and means the company has beaten its total sales volume of 157,976 units from 2025 in just nine months.
Highlights for September include the Proton Saga regaining the title of most popular vehicle in the country while for the Proton e.MAS lineup, the Proton e.MAS 5 continued to set new benchmarks with over 20,000 units delivered to customers in Malaysia. The overall result is a 45% increase over September 2025, leading to a YTD year-on-year growth of 40.8%. Estimated market share for the month is 28.9% while the YTD market share figure now stands at 26.9%.
Proton Saga retakes best-seller crown to lead strong sales for ICE models
The Proton Saga has traditionally been the strongest sales performer for the brand and in 2026 that position has been reinforced following the launch of the all new AMA based model on 27 November last year. Sales have grown exponentially, which was hinted at when 10,285 units were sold in January, and there was more joy in September when 8,701 units were delivered to eager buyers.
This allowed the Saga to once again be crowned as the best-selling model in the country while bringing YTD sales to 68,237 units, an increase of 34.5% over last year and putting it on the right track towards having one of its best ever sales years.
Other Proton ICE models have also been performing exceptionally well. The Proton S70 followed its first 3,000 unit month with a further 2,756 units sold to bring its YTD total to 20,709 units. This puts the model ahead of its total sales in 2025 and with the recent introduction of the Proton S70 1.5 i-GT variant, volume is expected to grow rapidly for the last three months of the year.
The Proton X50 remains the overall B-segment SUV category YTD sales leader with 20,163 units sold up to September after another 1,995 units were delivered. It’s bigger brother, the Proton X90 is also the leader for seven-seater D-segment SUVs. Another 430 units were delivered in September, boosting YTD sales to 3,250 units, 69.8% better than last year and pushing it past total sales from 2025 in just nine months. The upswing is due to the introduction of the updated model on 11 March, so the gap is expected to grow as more buyers discover the value delivered by Proton’s biggest offering.
When commenting on the company’s sales performance in September, Dato' Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON, said: "We have reached a new milestone in September by not only outperforming total sales for the whole of 2025, but also by achieving it in only nine months. With 60,540 units sold, PROTON also had its best Q3 performance since 2009 while setting a new high watermark for the PROTON-Geely partnership."
"Despite our current success, PROTON’s pace of model introductions, infrastructure investments and customer driven initiatives will not be slowing down. We still have at least two more launches to come before the end of the year, while our export business is targeting further growth in sales of both Proton and Geely badged vehicles originated from Malaysia, in overseas markets."

“The continued strong demand for PRO-NET’s electrified range of products is proof of the increased acceptance Malaysians have for xEVs. Currently, sales of Proton e.MAS models account for 19.3% of overall PROTON sales meaning that as an OEM, we have almost achieved the 2030 target of 20% of sales comprising xEV vehicles set by the Malaysian government for the automotive industry," said Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO- NET.
Exports further increase lead over 2025 with more sales in overseas markets
PROTON followed up its best export sales month of 2026 in August with another 1,311 units (Proton and Geely models) being shipped out of the Tanjong Malim plant. This raises total exports for the year to 7,370 units as sales in Proton’s own export markets and increased sourcing from overseas Geely markets continues to drive demand.
“As the country’s leading exporter of vehicles, PROTON intends to lead the way to make Malaysia a centre of production for regional and global markets. The seeds for accelerating growth in this area were planted by our own investments in production capacity, manpower upskilling, and technology and with a ramp up in activity to fully realise the potential of the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV), we see more gains to be made in this sector in the near future,” said Abdul Rashid Musa.
